Curaçao Named Best Caribbean Island of 2026

Curaçao didn't need a survey to prove it's special. But now it's official. USA Today's 10Best readers just voted Curaçao the number one Caribbean island to visit in 2026, ahead of Anguilla, Saint Martin, Barbados, Aruba and Bonaire. That's not a short list to top.

What stood out to voters wasn't one single thing. It was the mix. Voters called out the colorful colonial city center of Willemstad, the range of beaches, a genuinely strong food scene, and how much nature and adventure the island packs into a small footprint. That last part is the one worth paying attention to. Curaçao doesn't make you choose between history, water and wilderness. Christoffel Park, sunset cruises, diving and a UNESCO World Heritage city center all sit within a short drive of each other.

The numbers back it up too. Curaçao's Tourist Board just reported its strongest first half on record. Between January and June 2026, the island welcomed 437,086 stayover visitors, up 9% from the same period last year. That's the first time Curaçao has crossed 400,000 visitors in a first half. The Netherlands, the US and Canada lead the way, and Colombia is climbing fast. This isn't a one-award fluke. Curaçao is genuinely having a moment.

Why the city center is worth planning around

Here's the part locals notice that visitors usually miss. That "colorful colonial city center" praise? Most people only see a slice of it. Cruise passengers get a few hours near the terminal in Otrobanda. Resort guests often make one trip into Punda for photos at the Queen Emma Bridge and call it a day. But Willemstad is a genuinely walkable, or in our case ridable, UNESCO World Heritage city with two sides that don't get equal attention. Punda is the postcard. The floating market, Fort Amsterdam, the oldest synagogue in the Americas. Otrobanda is the side most people skip completely, and it's where the murals and artist alleys actually live.

If Curaçao just got voted best island in the Caribbean partly because of its city center, that city center deserves more than a photo stop. It's worth actually covering. On foot if you've got the whole day. On an e-scooter if you've got two or three hours and want to see both sides of the bay without your legs giving out in the heat.
